WHAT DO YOU GET WHEN YOU CROSS "THE TWILIGHT ZONE" AND "TALES FROM THE CRYPT"? Ask Me Anything!

Darrell E. Smith

"TWILIGHT HOTEL" , a 4-volume horror comic book series, is the answer to that question. It's a blood soaked love letter to those two great iconic sci-fi / horror brands. Its journey to comic book series, and ultimately motion picture is the mission. And as the journey continues, I must admit, it has been incredibly hard but it has also been incredibly satisfiying.  Vol1. has been completed and we, the creative team behind the project have turned to Kickstarter to help bring the series to the public.

Let's get started!

when did you start writing comic books ?

Nov 9, 3:16PM EST0

Twilight Hotel is our first venture into the comic book arena.  Ra X is the writer and has been writing (under different names) for several years.

He is also the writer of the feature screeplay of Twlight Hotel, which we hope to start production on in 2019. I'll attach a sample page from the script.

Nov 9, 5:17PM EST0

Do you have a horror film in the making?

Nov 9, 6:12AM EST0

Hello James, actually we plan on making Twilight Hotel into a feature film.  The screeplay is already done and we hope to get it in front of cameras in 2019.

Hello everybody.

Nov 8, 3:01PM EST0

In advance, I would like to thank everyone for taking the time to ask questions. I believe that the AMA forum is a fantastic one.  Having the opportunity to gain and share information is a very fortunate and valuable event. Also, I would like to ask of everyone, to please visit our crowdfunding page on Kickstarter.  If you can make a pledge, it will be greatly appreciated.  If not, that too is okay, but take a look just the same. What you see there will enforce or better explain many of the answers I have to your questions. Once again, thank you very much! https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/twilight-hotel-vol-1/twilight-hotel

How do you get ideas for comics? Did you do some course?

Nov 8, 1:06PM EST0

Hi Ayushi, I have to be honest, Ra X the writer of Twilight Hotel is the real idea guy of our group. I did ask him once, where he got his ideas from, because this guy comes up with some of the craziest things. He told me that he wishes he could tell me because he doesn't really know. He just wakes up with them, so I guess they come from his dreams.

What was your inspiration in creating such a comic book? Is this an expression of your real-life experience?

Nov 8, 3:58AM EST0

The inspiration for Twilight Hotel came from the love that myself my brother Shawn and writer Ra X has for Rod Serling's great t.v. show, "The Twilight Zone" and William Gains / HBO's "Tales from the Crypt."

Nov 7, 11:01PM EST0

Where are you from?

Nov 7, 3:28PM EST0

Hello Tamara, I am from Los Angeles, California. Born and raised.

Nov 7, 4:50PM EST0

Are your comic books in stores in your country?

Nov 7, 11:32AM EST0

Actually, Twilight Hotel is our first comic book. The first issue is complete and is in a select group of comic book stores in the US and a few stores in other countries (Australia, Ireland and the UK). We are running a Kickstarter campaign to raise funds to do a much bigger print run so that we can get it out to many more stores

Nov 7, 5:08PM EST0

What’s your background?

Nov 7, 9:13AM EST0

Actually, my background is in indie film production. Twilight Hotel is our first venture in the comic book industry. Working as a producer in the film business is not all that different from my role in producing comics. My title has changed but my resposibilities are pretty much the same. I set the schedule and coordinate the interaction of the writer and the artist and serve also as the content editor of each comic book.

Nov 8, 12:45PM EST0

How has your practice changed over time?

Nov 7, 8:30AM EST0

Well, yes and no. The things that need to get done in order to produce a film or comic book are still the same. Develop the story with the writer, hire artist, whether it be a actor or comic book artist. The things that have changed is the technology. Back in the day, in order to produce a project everyone had to at some point physically come together but now a days technology makes it possible for people to collaborate from long distances. For instance, the artist for Twilight Hotel, Michael Aryn, who lives in northern California and I have never met in person. And he and the writer, Ra X have also never met eachother in person either but people are able to produce great work dispite this fact.

How long did it take you to create your comic book Aceblade?

Nov 7, 8:23AM EST0

I'm sorry Shilpa, Aceblade isn't our creation. I believe that is produced by 4th Wall Productions.

Nov 8, 1:11PM EST0

How old were you when you started writing?

Nov 7, 7:31AM EST0

When I was about 15, and it was around that same time I realized that I was not destine to be a writer. I work close with writers and I know a great writers when I see one, or should I say "read" one. I am an editor. Here's an old saying... "Great writers, write. Those who can't, edit." That's not a real saying. I just made that up. LOL.

Nov 8, 1:23PM EST0

How long have you worked with comic books?

Nov 7, 5:37AM EST0

Hi Hanahb, I've been a fan of comics my entire life but Twlight Hotel is our, Squar Biz Comics first venture into the comic buisness.

Nov 8, 1:27PM EST0

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

Nov 7, 5:21AM EST0

Hopefully doing the same thing but on a higer level.

Nov 8, 1:27PM EST0

What themes do you pursuit?

Nov 7, 1:36AM EST0

Hi Heenal, myself and my partners have a love for all things "Horror"... movies, comic books...etc. The company that we recently created, Square Biz Entertainment is geared towards producing horror themed entertainment.

Nov 8, 1:32PM EST0

Do you think it is easy to create a character people will love?

Nov 7, 1:03AM EST0

Hi Maureen, I think that character development is complicated period. Whether it is a good or bad character. In real life people are complicated so I think the key is to create characters that aren't all bad or all good. That is more realistic. I guess the answer to your question is... it's complicated. I know that's not a real answer but in order to avoid stereotypes it is important to not paint a character all one color.

Nov 8, 1:44PM EST0

What is the best starting point for someone that wants to pursuit a career in comics writing?

Nov 7, 1:01AM EST0

Hi Marsha, I think the first place for a person to start is by looking at comics... not from an entertainment point of view but from a constructional point of view. Look at how they are made from the scripting of the story, the placement of the panels...etc. Totally deconstruct them and get a real understanding for how they are made physically and esthetically.

Nov 8, 1:53PM EST0

Are your comics designed for adults and children?

Nov 7, 12:35AM EST0

Twilight Hotel is for a mature audience. Although, much of it is tongue in cheek and full of dark humor, the visuals are quite graphic, so I don't recommend it for small children.

Nov 7, 11:40PM EST0

What is your all time favorite comic?

Nov 6, 9:27PM EST0

X-MEN!
